In recent years we were tasked with a project to take neglected hunting property and focus objectives with an emphasis on quality deer management. Our base line exhibited a deer population of 90 deer per square mile with a buck-to-doe ratio of 1:3.5. The quality of the overall deer herd and habitat was unsettling. Through a wide array of different intensive management practices, results were immediately evident; however, by year four we reached our preliminary goal and prepared a plan to maintain for years to come. In those four years a burn regime was established, overall habitat was improved immensely, a rigorous harvest program was implemented, abundance of data recorded, and most importantly of all, the target deer population of 65 deer per square mile and a ratio of 1:1 was met!
